Located in the popular Cotswold town of Winchcombe, this beautifully renovated, 18th century, three-storey terrace cottage, sleeps up to seven guests in four bedrooms, including one king-size, two twins (one in a garden annexe) and one single, with three bathrooms (1 family bathroom, 1 family shower room, 1 en-suite shower room, plus a downstairs W.C.). Outside are two patio areas and a Mediterranean-style garden, with table, chairs and a BBQ, which leads to the ensuite annexe.

During your stay, you are entitled to free admission to Sudeley Castle and Gardens during the Castle’s open season (except for separately ticketed events).

Overview

This traditional Cotswold home has been carefully refurbished to create the perfect mix of old and new. The Victorian inglenook fireplace, original beams (low in places, so mind your head!), wooden floors and terracotta red William Morris-style wallpaper are perfectly complemented with a modern, well-equipped kitchen, three delightful bedrooms (two on the first floor and one on the top floor), three bathrooms and a downstairs cloakroom, plus a modern garden annexe with twin beds. Lady Ashcombe has personally selected works of art and furniture to bring the history and character of the cottage to life. Some of the furnishings come directly from the Castles’ collection, others from local antique shops and auction rooms.

Thanks to its lantern ceiling in the Kitchen and Living Room and French doors out to the garden, light sweeps through the rear of the cottage, creating a bright and inspiring entertaining space. The downstairs living space runs from the cosy Dining Room at the front of the house, overlooking Vineyard Street, with its inglenook fireplace, wood burner, and beamed ceiling, through to the modern, well-equipped kitchen and the stunning Living Room. Here guests will find two spaces, where they can relax, play games, watch TV, and enjoy the unusual flame-effect fireplace.

The whole downstairs flows through to the suntrap courtyard garden, perfect for a BBQ after walking the Cotswolds Way.

Ground Floor

Entrance Hall:
On entering the cottage, there is a small entrance area decorated with a floral terracotta red, William Morris-style wallpaper. To the left are the stairs to the first and second floor, and to the right is the dining room, which leads through to the living room, courtyard garden and annexe.

Dining Room:
A charming entertaining space with a rectangular, wooden dining table and seating for eight guests. An inglenook fireplace and wood burner complete this characterful room, along with original beams and a large dresser displaying vintage plates. The dining room looks out onto the sunken footpath running along the front of the terrace of properties on Vineyard Street.

Off the Dining Room are two storage areas, one under the stairs (housing the ironing board, clothes airer and safety gate) and the second that leads to a cloakroom (W.C. and washbasin) with space to hang coats and keep walking boots (and store the highchair).

The Kitchen:
The modern kitchen is fitted with oak worktops and plenty of shaker-style cream-coloured cupboards. It is fully equipped, with a dishwasher, range-style oven/hob (6-rings/3 ovens), microwave, Nespresso machine, washer/dryer, and lovely washing up area under a “lantern” ceiling, which throws plenty of natural light into the room. The kitchen is fully kitted out with crockery, glassware, utensils, and cutlery for a self-catering stay.

The Living Room:
The Living Room is the star of the property, with its French windows to the courtyard garden and lantern ceiling making this a light and bright socialising space. Cleverly divided into two parts, with a large L-shaped sofa, two antique armchairs, 50” Smart TV, Gazco electric flame-effect fire and coffee table (ingeniously made from an antique trunk) at one end, and a beautiful card table, desk and bookcases at the other end. Books of all genres and some family games and cards are provided for guests to browse and enjoy.

French doors lead to the private and multi-level gravelled courtyard garden and the Annexe.

Annexe - Bedroom Four:
Up a small flight of steps, at the end of the garden, is the Annexe with its en-suite twin bedroom. This generously sized room is furnished with two single beds complimented by two bedside chests and reading lamps, a handy chair, a nest of tables and a wardrobe. (Note: WiFi cover is not strong in the Annexe.)

Annexe En-Suite:
The en-suite has a power shower unit, wash basin with mirrored vanity unit, heated towel rail and W.C.

First Floor

Bedroom Two:
This single bedroom overlooks Vineyard Street. It is furnished with a single bed, a built-in wardrobe and window seat with a cushion and many items of vintage furniture, including a wooden bench, dressing table with stool and lamp.

Family Bathroom:
This bright and modern bathroom has a full-size bath, with an over-bath shower, washbasin and vanity unit, illuminated mirror, heated towel rail, and W.C.

Bedroom One:
A delightful bedroom with an inviting king-size double bed and a pretty view over the garden and Annexe, Dent’s Almshouses, and towards the Cotswold countryside. Complete with bedside cabinets and lamps, a chest of drawers, two chairs, a built-in wardrobe, and a storage ottoman. (A travel cot is stored in the wardrobe.)

Second Floor

Bedroom Three:
This spacious and bright twin bedroom has a fantastic view over the garden and Annexe, and out to Sudeley Hill and the surrounding Cotswold countryside. There are two bedside tables and lamps, two storage ottomans, two chairs, a chest of drawers, and a built-in wardrobe.

Family Shower Room:
The top floor bathroom has a walk-in shower, washbasin and vanity unit, illuminated mirror, heated towel rail, and W.C.

Outside

The private garden at the rear of the house has two landscaped levels, with the first a patio immediately outside the Living Room - with a bistro table and two chairs - and the second a patio area immediately outside the Annexe – with a charcoal BBQ, outdoor dining table, six chairs and a parasol. A gravelled area and path connect the two patios which are enhanced with flowerbeds and overhanging mature trees. (Cushions for the outdoor seats are stored in the under-stairs cupboard).

We recommend the Sudeley Castle circular walk for a relaxing stroll; a 2-mile loop setting off straight from the cottage’s front door, taking you into the grounds of historic Sudeley Castle - a must-visit for any guest. The 2.5 mile walk to Belas Knap, a Neolithic chambered long barrow sat atop Cleeve Hill, is also a great walk to try from the doorstep, providing you don’t mind the incline.

Overall good

Verified Up Front Reviews
One or two minor issues, single beds not great but overall good, well equipped and good location, walkable to Sudeley castle, free entry a bonus. Enjoyed our short stay as did our family from Australia

Margaret Stones

Amazing location but beware if your over 6ft!

Amazing location for Sudeley Castle and a short walk up the hill to town. Beautifully decorated but watch out tall people as this is a classic old school house that was built when humans were a lot smaller. Great amenities, clean.

Great Location and pretty good house

Verified Up Front Reviews
The property provided comfortable accommodation for our family of 7. The Kitchen and Living area is well equipped and comfortable. Due to the fabulous weather we were able to eat outside which was a real treat. Had the weather been less good we may have struggled with the internal dining space, which lacks much natural light and had inadequate internal lighting. Overall the property appeared clean but we did find evidence of a significant moth problem in the first floor bedrooms. We contacted the out of hours service who were apologetic and supportive and offered to attend to treat the problem on the next morning. We managed to get rid of the dead moths and neutralise the live problem and so did not need external help but it was a little un-nerving for those occupying the first floor bedrooms. There was evidence of eaten carpet on the first floor landing and it was clear that previous moth treatment had been carried out but had probably lapsed more recently. Our cleaning of the moths did highlight a lack of cleaning at lower levels in all areas with cobwebs and debris left under chests of drawers, tables and chairs. All these things are easily resolved and should not detract from the great location and generally well equipped accommodation. Free access into Sudeley Castle and Gardens was a real bonus too. We would definitely like to return to property (and pray for the sun to shine again)

Good location, beautiful part of the world, easy to get out and explore. Loved it.

A great place to have Xmas with family

Verified Up Front Reviews
We had a family group of 7 adults and an extra two for Christmas lunch. All were accommodated with individual comfortable bedrooms and the large living areas made it easy to entertain a large group like this. The kitchen worked perfectly for Xmas day and for the other meals- well equipped and spacious. Open fire was a nice addition. And the ample Welcome Pack was much appreciated.

A beautiful cottage, with plenty of space for our family. The annexe was a huge plus. Kitchen very well equipped - a lovely place and very comfortable!

Lovely Cottage

Verified Up Front Reviews
The house is in an excellent location for Winchcombe, Sudeley Castle & accessing the Cotswold Way. The kitchen was well equipped and there was plenty of space for 6 plus 2 dogs. A small improvement would be coat hooks/stand and a shoe rack, as due to the weather, we had nowhere to put coats & boots!

A terrible stay ruined by builders and no customer service

Verified Up Front Reviews
The property was opposite a building site - covered with scaffolding with up to 8 builders vans outside and machinery! We were not told ahead of booking and had to check out early due to the constant noise and builders dust everywhere. Our complaint was ignored by Bolthole Retreats who said it was not their problem as it was “outside” the property. A summer holiday ruined as well as a lot of money lost - do not book with them!!

Sophie Pudge

Excellent cottage - well located, well equipped

Verified Up Front Reviews
A lovely cottage for our girls walking holiday. Girls (and dog) all enjoyed the excellent accommodation. Well equipped, well situated, and highly recommend it. Our only comments would be: - the dining table and chairs would be better situated in the large lounge area as the current dining room is rather gloomy. That might be better as cosy snug - the annex (which was very nice) needs a 'spider clean' - the room itself was clean but there were a LOT of spiders - the recommended walks were good BUT the Mosaic walk and the St Kenelms walks both have stiles which are impossible for larger dogs or older people. It made 2 nice walks rather challenging/nearly impossible. It would help to note this

A note was left listing a few repairs & attention needed. These didn’t spoil our stay, it was wonderful & a lovely rest for two of the group who came to the cottage straight after being present at the Post Office Scandal Enquiry. You can watch one of them, Kay Linnell, who has & continues to fight for the wronged sub postmasters (on You Tube). We thoroughly enjoyed Sudeley Castle & the area so wouldn’t be surprised if we do a return visit! Sandra

Great property, plenty of space and convenient location. I would also like to praise the responsive staff. The lights weren’t working in one room on our arrival and although it was late in the evening someone came to fix the problem very promptly.

A lovely cottage with excellent facilities in a great location

Verified Up Front Reviews
Property was of a high quality but a few niggles which need addressing. Arrived to a minor infestation of ants in the kitchen around the floor and work surface. Also moths especially in top bedroom. Loose slab on steps up to garden, which was a hazard and a shame the patio areas hadn't been swept as they too were slippery in the wet (some of our group was using the lovely annexe). Apart from that we really enjoyed our stay and there was plenty of room for our party of 5 adults and dog! Hope to return some day.

Great time!

Verified Up Front Reviews
We had a great time staying at 14 Vineyard Street! We loved the house and having the full kitchen, washer and dryer, cable and Internet, multiple bathrooms and bedrooms a good distance from the socializing space. Free admission to Sudeley Castle was also fabulous as it allowed us to go multiple times with the kids. It was the perfect location for our family. The only comment we have that is for management is that there is something off about the water in the kitchen. It tastes bad. The water upstairs and in the separate sleeping quarters out back was fine, but the kitchen water wasn't. Our 5-year-old ended up with stomach issues during the trip, which we eventually attributed to the water. Once we stopped giving him kitchen water for drinking his stomach situation improved. It would be great if you had the kitchen water looked at just to avoid anyone having any issues in the future.

We loved this house. The location was perfect for exploring Sudeley castle, the town, and the walking paths. The house was clean and spacious. The kitchen was well stocked and modern. Sitting in the garden drinking tea watching the wood pigeons was one of the highlights of our holiday. We would definitely stay here again.

Super place

Verified Up Front Reviews
We loved this house. It was welcoming, convenient and comfortable. We liked the welcome tea, coffee and biscuits, found the bathrooms and water just right. We enjoyed sitting in the garden and sitting room. We do have a suggestion. It was warm at night and the duvets are a bit too warm. We would have appreciated cotton sheets to use instead. Highly recommended.

Six old friends from Uni, who live all around England, converged at an ideal place centrally… Great weather made the weekend extra special, but the house and it’s condition really were above expectations. We used the free access to the castle aswell and so actually I’ve managed to promote myself to ‘future organiser’ due to my luck/skill in finding this kind of property in that kind of condition. Thanks to all involved

Great group stay

Verified Up Front Reviews
I brought a group of plein air painters to Winchcombe to paint at Sudeley Castle and in the area. We rented both 14 Vineyard street and Almsbury Farmhouse. The Farmhouse was our operations for our group of 16 but those who stayed at vineyard street were please with their kitchen and living spaces. Beautiful painting locations were just steps outside our door. The bedrooms were comfortable. We stayed during a particularly hot summer. The upstairs room got very hot during the day, but open windows and fans (the farmhouse has some) cooled things down after sunset. Our group took full advantage of the free entry to Sudeley Castle. Painting the landscape for three days. April and castle staff and Steven (head gardener) were delightful, informative and friendly.

Beautiful location and quaint cottage!

Verified Up Front Reviews
We love the location of this cottage and the character of the beautiful property! The garden was a lovely place to sit in the evening and the annex space was a bonus. Unfortunately, five of the six beds are single twins and four of those five had very uncomfortable mattresses in which you could feel the springs in the bed. Since it seems reasonable that some adults will be in the twin beds it would be nice to have better quality mattresses in those rooms. We did, however, have a wonderful stay and loved the village!

14 Vineyard Street Winchcombe.

Verified Up Front Reviews
Lovely, 'quirky' Cotswold cottage, beautifully modernised and quite luxurious. An excellent base for touring the Cotswolds, and Winchcombe is well-served with shops, pubs, restaurants and cafes. The only issues we had were: Shower over bath didn't work; Defective smoke alarm which had to be removed (not replaced during our stay); & Somewhat unpredictable (and difficult to adjust) central heating controls. Very convenient for visiting Sudeley Castle.

Beautifully appointed large cottage in the heart of the Cotswolds

Verified Up Front Reviews
Along with other family members, we booked several cottages in Winchcombe for the weekend. That meant we saw some of the 'competition' too. 14 Vineyard Street was lovely with plenty of on-street but easily accessible parking. The cottage had everything we needed, with a well-appointed kitchen, plenty of bathrooms and very effective WiFi. My wife and I slept in the guest annex at the end of the garden (- perhaps a 10 metre walk) which was comfortable and pleasant ... although I'd suggest the toilet pan could do with re-securing to the floor and a new seat. It's certainly not unique to 14 Vineyard Street, but a three day booking where you cannot get into the accommodation on Day 1 until 4pm and need to be out by 10am on Day 3 means an effective period of occupation of just 42 hours, but I understand the need to clean and prepare for the next guests.

Vineyard Street

Verified Up Front Reviews
Great location for walking straight from the front door. Good walking access to shops, restaurants and pubs. We had a great 3 generation family holiday with 2 dogs despite the August weather! The top flight of stairs are steep even for fit 30 somethings and the single room is very dark and gloomy for a young child. But as the Grandparents we went into the annex and just moved the very breakable ornaments and dark shade bedside light away from our 4 year old guest in the single room - it was all doable! Just had to put it all back very carefully! Some of the glass top coffee tables and furniture is light and not entirely child and dog friendly but easy to move out of the way. We would holiday there again !

We thoroughly enjoyed our time in this cottage. It was spotlessly clean, well equipped and comfortable. The location was super, close to local shops so everything nearby, complete with easy access to some wonderful walks too. The local restaurants were excellent but you will need to book in advance. A cottage we would highly recommend and one we look forward to returning to.

Minor criticism

Verified Up Front Reviews
The carpet in the living room should have grips under it to stop it from rucking up when one stands up from a chair or sofa. It is easy to slip on it and could easily cause an accident. While the chairs in the living room are beautiful and certainly in keeping with the style of the house, my 92 year old sister would have appreciated a rather more comfortable armchair! We were disappointed in the tour of the Castle. We totally missed the star of the show (the privvy) but that was probably our fault. Church and garden lovely. Apart from the above minor points, we very much enjoyed our stay. Marion Denney

Winchcombe Cottage near Sudeley Castle

Verified Up Front Reviews
Our family of five spent Thanksgiving week at one of the stone cottages in Winchcombe owned by Sudeley Castle. It was located on a small side street that led up to the Castle, which we were allowed to visit without charge throughout our stay. The cottage was charming, with a wood burning stove in the dining room, a modern and well-appointed kitchen, and a spacious living room with electric fireplace, large television, and french doors and windows looking out to a lovely courtyard garden. Upstairs there was a comfortable master bedroom and bath for my wife and me. There was another bedroom, plus bath, on the third floor used by one of our sons. A third single bedroom was not used. Our other son and daughter-in-law stayed in the guest cottage at the back of the courtyard which had its own bath. We appreciated such touches as the wooden puzzle and books that provided rainy day activities. We did not use the kitchen much for cooking as there were charming pubs and restaurants within walking distance. The location was convenient and we took several walks along the Cotswolds Way.

A comfortable retreat near Sudeley Castle .

Verified Up Front Reviews
14 Vineyard Sreet is ideally situated for either a long weekend near Sudeley Castle in Winchcombe or for a week or longer to explore the Cotswolds as a whole . The property is spacious and comfortable and easily sleeps up to 7 adults . There are separate lounge and dining rooms and a well-equipped kitchen . Most days we managed to park 2 cars close to the property in Vineyard Street but otherwise , parking can be found on the Main Street in Winchcombe a couple of minutes away . There is plenty of seating in the living areas and many of the items of furniture are antiques from the Castle estate . Winchcombe itself has lots of interesting and useful shops and eateries , including some excellent pubs and restaurants. 7 of us stayed for a week and in that time we visited Sudeley Castle for free ( a benefit of staying at 14 Vineyard Street ) , the Cotswold towns / villages of Burford , Stow -on-the Wold , Moreton-in-Marsh and Broadway , plus a trip to the steam railway at Winchcombe ( trains run from Cheltenham race course to Broadway ) . In summary, an ideal bolthole for an enjoyable and pleasant stay in the Cotswolds .

Birthday weekend in the Cotswolds

Verified Up Front Reviews
We stayed as a family group in 14 Vineyard Street and it was a perfect location and house for us. It was very comfortable relaxing in the sitting room with plenty of space for us to read, do a jigsaw, snooze, and generally relax over the slightly wet weekend. It was great to be able to visit Sudeley Castle for free and we did two lovely walks right from the door - to Belas Knap long barrow and to the Roman mosaic in the woods. There was something quite exciting about "discovering" the well-preserved mosaic in the woods and pulling back the tarpaulin to reveal this small mosaic. The cottage was very clean and had everything we needed for a long weekend. One of our group stayed in the garden room and it was warm and cosy. A few odd steps in the cottage to look out for in the night. Great location for a short stroll to the shops of Winchcombe. Several good shops, restaurants, pubs and cafes in the town if you don't want to cook.

14 Vine St a must

Verified Up Front Reviews
14 Vine Street is very cosy. Situated at the bottom of a hilly road to Sudeley Castle. We were attending a wedding at the castle so only stayed there for 2 nights but we couldn't fault it. I'd recommend it to anyone requiring time in a quaint village with just enough amenities. Not an area for those with mobility difficulties.

Great house for a mixed family group.

Verified Up Front Reviews
Our family took two Bolthole houses, this and Sudeley Castle Guest Cottage, to gather for a wedding celebration in Sudeley Castle (beautiful). Both houses were attractively situated, comfortable and well appointed, with plenty of crockery and glassware, Vineyard St (with open plan downstairs and a bathroom on each floor) being particularly well designed for a mixed family group. We could walk between the two houses in about 20min, through Sudeley Castle grounds, but it would have been good to be given a map making this route clear: it can be driven in daytime (gate shuts about 5pm) but at night if no moon you would need a torch. We also feel the small step up to and down into the first floor bathroom in Vineyard St should have been marked out or lit in some way to warn visitors - it is a trip hazard, especially in the dark.

We couldn’t have asked for a better place to stay, the cottage itself was very comfortable and spacious and the position was ideal for the centre of Winchcombe with its shops, tea rooms and restaurants. We didn’t have to use the card at all as various walks were on the doorstep.

The cottage at Vinyard Steet was delightful, located close to the village amenities and yet right next to the Cotswolds Way footpath made it ideal. The staff at the Castle were lovely as well as the maintenance team who came out to sort out our heating as soon as we called. We loved Winchcombe, it had a good range of shops, cafes, and pubs and is in a good location for exploring the Cotswolds.

Family stay for 70th birthday celebration

Verified Up Front Reviews
We were a party of 7 adults staying for my husband's 70th birthday and were delighted with the way in which the cottage has been renovated to a very high standard. The lighting was good and it was lovely and warm on a chilly March weekend. Beds are comfortable and the furnishings are all excellent. There was plenty of space for all of us, and we enjoyed the 50-inch TV. It was also a nice touch to have the welcome pack containing tea, coffee, sugar, milk and jams. Location is great with country walks on the doorstep as well as being just a short walk to Sudeley Castle which we much enjoyed, with such a lot to see there, and the cottage is only a couple of minutes walk to the shops and amenities of Winchcombe. As a small suggestion, we felt that a couple of packs of cards would be good, and we couldn't find a glass water jug for the table or salad servers. We also felt that some more everyday cutlery would have been useful and a few more matching wine glasses. Another suggestion would be a hand rail up one side of the steps leading to the upper part of the garden and the annexe, as this was where the older members of our party slept, rather than the younger ones, and a rail would have been helpful. The dishwasher and washer/dryer were great, and it was a very good idea to have a couple of torches near the front door. It was also very welcoming to see the vases of daffodils when we arrived. We had a lovely family celebration and everyone commented on the attractiveness of the cottage.

Excellent location, Great for large groups

We stayed in mid February, a large family group, and absolutely loved the cottage and it’s location! It’s literally around the corner from the village of Winchcombe, and a minute walk to the nearest pub. You’re also at the doorstep of Cotswold Way and numerous other gorgeous trails and hikes, as well as Sudely Castle. Of all the beautiful towns and villages we visited in the Cotswolds, Winchcombe was our favorite. The cottage itself is very spacious and comfortable, with lots of bedrooms, bathrooms, and seating in the main living room and dining room. The location is really quiet, yet on the cusp of activity. And we really appreciated having a washer/dryer to do laundry. Staff were very easy to contact, and in fact showed up immediately when we were having trouble with a bedroom light. Our only complaint may be related to the neighbors...there was a slight smell of cigarette smoke upstairs, and since this is a non-smoking unit we weren’t sure if it was coming through from the neighbors, or if someone had broken the rules and smoked prior to our arrival. The smell wasn’t bad, but I mention it in case anyone is allergic to smoke. Regardless, we really loved this cottage and couldn’t believe how adorably cute and comfortable it was! We can’t wait to come back, and highly recommend it to others!

What a delight! Such a lovely Cotswold stone house with everything you would need, even for preparing a big Christmas lunch!! The town is beautiful and the people so friendly in all the pubs we visited. The Christmas Lights Spectacular at Sudely were a fantastic way to top off the visit. Great proximity to all the walks in the area. Thank you for our delightful Christmas adventure!!

Beautifully refurbished to a high standard with all the amenities you could want. We had the incorrect code to enter the property when we arrived but I called the number provided and this was sorted straight away. Great location, very easy booking process, clean, character property but recently renovated to a high standard. Very close to the castle and brilliant to be able to access this for free! Would love to return to this property and Happy to recommend. Thanks.

Perfect cottage, perfect location, perfect weekend

When booking self catering I am always anxious having had bad experiences in the past and I felt really responsible as I’d organised this for our family. 14 Vineyard Street was perfect and can only be described as a gem. Everything in the cottage was immaculate and tasteful. There was space for us all to spread out or be together in all the living rooms. Kitchen was fab again space for us all to muck in and cook/ prep together. There was never a moment when we said I wish we had ...... everything we needed was there. Took advantage of free entry to Sudley Castle - thank you. It was a great place for us all in the pouring rain.

14 Vineyard St. Ensure you take everything with you as very little is provided.

The cottage was lovely. A few snags, window lock in upper bedroom was not attached by any screws and fell off when we tried to open it. Draining board had a hole in a it so got the wood soaking wet. For the price of this stay I would have expected a welcome pack - nothing was provided! It is usual to have fresh milk, bread, tea and coffee and in some places wine and beer. Key code given was incorrect so had to ring bolt hole retreat.
